The east has the most coves and the fewest people per square kilometre on Mallorca. Between Cala d'Or, Santanyí, Manacor and Cala Ratjada, working country towns sit alongside strongly seasonal coastal resorts — and the gap between the two is wider in winter than anywhere else on the island.
For your money you generally get more space here than in the south west or Palma. The trade-off is distance: 45 to 70 minutes to Palma depending on the town, and practically nothing works without a car.

The towns in the east
Santanyí is the town many people look for and few find in time: honey-coloured sandstone, a well-known market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, galleries and cafés open all year.
Manacor is the island's second city and anything but touristy — furniture workshops, pearl manufacture, a hospital, a train station. If you put daily life and price above the view, this is where you find it.
Cala d'Or and Cala Ratjada are the coastal resorts: coves, promenades, a marina. Busy and lively in summer, largely closed in winter.
In between lie Felanitx, Porto Cristo, Portocolom and Artà — smaller places with their own daily life, each within reach of the water.
Roads and connections
Via the Ma-19 and Ma-15 you reach Santanyí in about 45 minutes, Manacor in 50 and Cala Ratjada in a good 70. The train runs from Palma as far as Manacor; otherwise it is bus or car.
Distances within the region are long. From Santanyí to Cala Ratjada is a good hour along the coast — the east is larger than it looks on the map.
The airport is 40 to 70 minutes away. For a longer stay without frequent flights that is no problem; for commuters it is.
The east in winter
Cala d'Or, Cala Ratjada and the smaller resorts largely wind down between November and March. Living there in winter means plenty of quiet and little choice when shopping.
Santanyí, Felanitx, Manacor and Artà, by contrast, stay fully alive — markets, doctors, schools, trades. Those are the places where a winter let in the east makes sense.
If you want the coast in winter, look at Portocolom or Porto Cristo: small harbours with a year-round population rather than pure resorts.
Who it suits
The east works if you want space, quiet and landscape, take a car for granted and do not need a city for daily life. For longer stays with remote work it is often the most sensible choice.
It works less well if you fly often, want to manage without a car, or need activity around you in winter.
