The north is the quieter and usually cheaper half of the island. Around Pollença and Alcúdia sit two established old towns, along with the wide bays of Playa de Muro and the s'Albufera nature park. From Palma it is a good 50 minutes.
The price for that quiet is winter: between November and March a large share of the restaurants and shops in the harbour towns close. If you choose the north for the cold months, know that first and look in the old towns rather than right on the water.

Pollença, Alcúdia and the bays
Pollença is the inland town, with its Calvary steps, a Sunday market and daily life that carries on all year. Port de Pollença lies six kilometres further on at the water and is the quieter but more seasonal part.
Alcúdia has the best-preserved town walls on the island and an old centre that stays alive in winter too. The harbour and Playa de Muro follow with long sandy beaches — packed in summer, almost empty in winter.
If you are after nature, this is the place: s'Albufera is the largest wetland in the Balearics, and the Formentor peninsula is among the most striking stretches of coast in Mallorca.
Roads and connections
Via the Ma-13 you reach Alcúdia or Pollença from Palma in 50 to 60 minutes. The train runs as far as sa Pobla or Inca, with a bus onwards — doable, but awkward for daily life.
A car is effectively a requirement in the north, unless you live in the middle of Pollença or in Alcúdia's old town and mostly stay there.
The airport is around 55 minutes away. Anyone flying often during their stay will notice the difference from Palma.
The north in winter
In Port de Pollença, Alcúdia harbour and Playa de Muro most businesses close between November and March. Some streets feel deserted then.
The two old towns are the opposite: people live there year-round, the weekly markets carry on — Pollença on Sundays, Alcúdia on Tuesdays and Sundays — and doctors and supermarkets stay open.
From February to April the cyclists arrive. The north is then the centre of road cycling on the island, which brings hotels and restaurants back early and means more demand for seasonal rentals in that window.
Who it suits
The north works if you want quiet and landscape, have a car and can live with less choice in winter. For cyclists, walkers and birdwatchers it is the best corner of the island.
It works less well if you need city life or fly often. Anyone who wants company in winter is better served in Palma.
