Monthly rentals in South West Mallorca

Bendinat and Portals Nous are closest to Palma and the quietest of the coastal towns: residential complexes, a golf course, a marina, little through traffic. For a longer stay with a car this is the most comfortable corner.

Santa Ponsa and Peguera are considerably larger and tourist-shaped in summer. In exchange they have supermarkets, doctors and schools all year — and noticeably more flats available in winter.

Port d'Andratx is the most striking spot: a real harbour town with fishing boats and restaurants, backed by steep slopes overlooking the bay. In return you are 35 minutes from Palma, and many houses sit where nothing works without a car.

Cas Català, Illetas and El Toro fill the gaps between — smaller places, coves, mostly residential.

The Ma-1 links Palma with Andratx and is a good road. Bendinat is a quarter of an hour away, Santa Ponsa a good twenty minutes, Port d'Andratx around 35. For the airport, add crossing Palma.

Bus routes serve the coastal towns along the Ma-1, but far less frequently than in the city and on a reduced winter timetable. For everyday life here, plan on having a car.

Within the towns the streets are often steep. If you rent on a slope, check the listing for a lift and a parking space — walking to the beach sounds good, walking back uphill with the shopping less so.

Between November and March the difference between the towns is at its greatest. In Santa Ponsa and Peguera a share of the restaurants and hotels close, though enough stays open for daily life.

Port d'Andratx and Andratx town itself stay lively, because people live there out of season too. Portals Nous is very quiet in winter — lovely if that is what you want, silent if it is not.

The advantage of the whole area in winter: Palma is close enough that local closures hardly matter. You drive twenty minutes and have the whole city.

The south west works if you have a car, want the water, and still want to reach Palma in half an hour. Families value the international schools in the area, which run outside the season too.

It works less well if you want to manage without a car or value city life. Then Palma itself is the better choice.
